Today I’m going to share a detailed review of a product that is often “recommended” among European and Australian growers: Dr. Schimmel S.M.T – Plant & Leaf Wash, which is commonly used to control spider mites, russet mites, and to clean leaves during the veg → early flower stages.
1. What is Dr. Schimmel S.M.T?
This isn’t a chemical pesticide. S.M.T. is a leaf wash that works through physical/mechanical action:
- Destroys the membranes of spider mites
- Clogs their breathing holes (spiracles) → causing the mites to dehydrate and die
- Washes away eggs + larvae from the leaves
- Cleans off dust, honeydew, and fungi on the leaf surface
Key Benefit: No residues – can be used even during flowering.
2. Pros from actual testing
- Quick effectiveness at low – moderate levels: Mites significantly decreased after 2 sprays
- Very safe – doesn’t burn leaves, doesn’t burn flowers, no chemical smell
- Easy to use – mix with water, spray, wait, and wipe
- Cleans leaves very well – dust/honeydew completely gone
- Made from plant-based ingredients and organic surfactants
3. Weaknesses to know before using
It’s not a “miracle” product in cases of:
Heavy Infestation (lots of webbing, curled leaves)
→ S.M.T cannot eliminate them all
→ Must be used in conjunction with Bio Acaricide, Abamectin, or Beauveria bassiana
Cannot replace an IPM program
It is just a leaf wash, not a systemic pesticide
Requires repeated spraying
Every 3 days for 7–10 days → to get the full effect
