1. Determining Harvest Timing

1.1 Trichome — The Most Accurate Indicator

Use a 60-100x magnifying loupe or digital microscope to observe trichomes on the flower (calyx), NOT on the sugar leaf, since trichomes on leaves mature earlier.

Common target: 70-80% milky + 20-30% amber = balance between potency and effect.

1.2 Additional Signs

  • Pistil: 70-90% turning brown/orange (a reference indicator, less accurate than trichomes)
  • Fan leaves naturally yellowing (senescence) — the plant is redirecting energy into the flowers
  • Flowers swelling, calyxes plumping, resin sticking to fingers

2. Pre-Harvest Flushing

A major point of debate within the community. A study by RX Green Technologies/University of Guelph (2020, Stemeroff et al.) using 3 flush treatments (0, 7, 14 days) found no statistically significant difference in mineral content in the flowers, and a blind tasting panel could not distinguish between them. The 0-day flush even showed slightly higher quality in the blind test.

In practice: A 3-7 day flush can help save on fertilizer and causes no harm. A 14+ day flush can stress the plant and reduce yield.

3. Wet Trim vs Dry Trim

Recommendation: Dry trim for the highest quality. If the drying room’s RH is above 65%, wet trim to reduce mold risk.

4. The Science of Drying

4.1 Optimal Drying Conditions

The “60/60” rule: Temperature of 60°F (15-16°C) and humidity of 55-65% RH. Ideal drying time: 10-14 days.

Research from PMC/Plants (2025, Postharvest Drying and Curing): Hot air drying combined with curing in glass jars produces the best results for cannabinoid preservation and microbial safety.

Key finding (Ed Rosenthal 2026): Flowers dried over 4 days had a “flat” smell compared to the same strain dried over 10 days — no curing technique can recover what fast drying has lost.

4.2 Terpenes and Drying Speed

  • Monoterpenes (myrcene, limonene, pinene): lose ~55% in the first week if temperature exceeds 20°C (68°F)
  • Sesquiterpenes (caryophyllene, humulene): more stable, lose less
  • Drying temperature above 25°C: rapid terpene loss, “hay-like” flavor
  • Cold plasma pretreatment (2025, ScienceDirect): preserves 79-96% of terpenes — a new technology not yet widespread

4.3 Setting Up the Drying Room

  • Complete darkness (no light — light degrades THC into CBN)
  • Gentle air circulation (oscillating fan pointed at the wall, NOT blowing directly on the flowers)
  • Dehumidifier if needed (maintain 55-65% RH)
  • Stable temperature of 15-18°C (use AC in tropical regions)
  • Hang whole plants or use a drying rack

4.4 Checking for Drying Completion

  • Small stems “snap” (do not bend) = sufficiently dried
  • Flowers feel dry on the outside but not yet brittle = ready to cure
  • Ideal flower moisture before going into the jar: 11-13% (use a moisture meter)

5. Curing: A Controlled Fermentation Process

5.1 The Science of Curing

Curing is a slow aerobic fermentation process carried out in a controlled environment. During this process: chlorophyll breaks down (reducing the “grassy” taste), residual sugars and starches are consumed by microorganisms (reducing harshness), terpenes stabilize and develop more complexity, and THC-A continues to convert slightly.

5.2 Standard Curing Procedure

  • Equipment: Glass jar (Mason jar) — fill to 64-75% of volume
  • Weeks 1-2: Burping (opening the lid) 2-3 times/day, 10-15 minutes each time
  • Weeks 3-4: Burping 1 time/day, 5-10 minutes
  • Weeks 5-8: Burping 2-3 times/week
  • After 8 weeks: Seal completely, open to check once a month
  • Storage temperature: 15-21°C, complete darkness

5.3 Troubleshooting During Curing

  • Ammonia smell when opening the jar = too much moisture, anaerobic fermentation → remove the flowers and re-dry for 12-24 hours
  • Flowers too dry (< 55% RH in the jar) → add a Boveda 62% pack or a few fresh leaves for a few hours
  • Mold appears = discard immediately, cannot be salvaged

6. Long-Term Storage & Boveda

  • Boveda 58% or 62%: maintains stable two-way humidity control (absorbs and releases moisture)
  • 58%: for tropical regions (better mold resistance)
  • 62%: for dry regions / long-term storage (better moisture retention)
  • Replace the Boveda pack when it hardens (the salt solution is depleted)
  • Storage beyond 6 months: consider vacuum sealing + refrigeration (2-8°C)
  • Do NOT use ordinary plastic bags (static causes trichomes to fall off) — use glass jars or a CVault

7. Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

8. Harvest - Drying - Curing Checklist

Harvest:

  • ☐ 70-80% milky trichomes + 20-30% amber
  • ☐ Water with clean water 3-7 days prior (optional)
  • ☐ Cut early in the morning (before lights turn on) — terpenes are highest

Drying:

  • ☐ Temperature: 15-18°C | RH: 55-65%
  • ☐ Complete darkness, gentle air circulation
  • ☐ Duration: 10-14 days
  • ☐ Snap test: small stems break crisply

Curing:

  • ☐ Glass jar, filled to 64-75%
  • ☐ Burping on schedule (gradually decreasing)
  • ☐ Check smell every time you open
  • ☐ Minimum 4 weeks, ideally 8+ weeks
  • ☐ Boveda 58-62% for long-term storage
