Nutrient Deficiency & Toxicity: Reading Your Leaves

1. Why Leaves Are Your Plant’s “Dashboard”

Cannabis leaves directly reflect your plant’s nutritional status. When a nutrient is deficient or excessive, the plant signals through leaf color, shape, and the location of affected leaves.

The most important principle: distinguish between “mobile” and “immobile” nutrients.

  • Mobile nutrients: N, P, K, Mg — when deficient, the plant pulls from old leaves to feed new growth → symptoms appear on LOWER LEAVES.
  • Immobile nutrients: Ca, Fe, Mn, Zn, B — cannot be relocated → symptoms appear on NEW GROWTH (top).

2. Nitrogen (N) Deficiency

Nitrogen deficiency is the most common issue in cannabis, especially during veg when the plant needs heavy N for leaf and stem development.

Symptoms

  • Lower leaves turn uniformly yellow (no green veins remaining), starting from the tip inward
  • Yellow leaves drop early, the whole plant looks pale
  • Thin stems, slow growth, fewer bud sites

Treatment

  • Increase the Grow component of your base nutrients
  • Add fast-acting N: CalMag (contains N) or fish emulsion (organic)
  • Check pH: soil 6.0–6.8, hydro 5.5–6.0

Note: During flowering, the plant needs less N — some lower leaf yellowing is normal.

3. Phosphorus (P) Deficiency

Phosphorus is critical for energy transfer, root development, and flower formation.

Symptoms

  • Lower leaves turn abnormally dark green
  • Petioles and stems develop purple/red coloration (anthocyanin buildup)
  • Dark spots on old leaves, leaves curl downward
  • Delayed flowering, small flowers, low resin production

Treatment

  • Increase Bloom nutrients or add PK booster
  • Check pH — P locks out below pH 5.5 or above 7.0
  • Organic: bone meal, bat guano, rock phosphate

Note: Purple color may be genetic or cold-induced — check if petioles are purple AND growth is stunted to confirm P deficiency.

4. Potassium (K) Deficiency

Potassium regulates osmotic pressure, stomata function, and sugar transport within the plant.

Symptoms

  • Old leaf margins turn yellow/brown and look burnt (leaf margin necrosis)
  • Leaves become dry and brittle, center stays green but edges die
  • Rust-colored spots on leaf blades
  • Weak plants susceptible to pests and diseases

Treatment

  • Increase Bloom/PK in your nutrient regimen
  • Add potassium silicate (also strengthens stems)
  • Organic: kelp meal, wood ash (careful — raises pH)

5. Calcium & Magnesium (Ca/Mg) — CalMag

Ca/Mg deficiency is extremely common with coco coir or RO/filtered water.

Calcium (Ca) Deficiency

  • Brown spots on new leaves (top), edges curl upward (cupping)
  • Poor root development, weak plant
  • Bud drop, immature flowers die off

Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency

  • Yellowing between veins (interveinal chlorosis) on OLD LEAVES
  • Veins remain green, leaf blades turn yellow
  • Brittle leaves that curl upward and drop early

Treatment

  • Add CalMag supplement (CANNA CalMag Agent, Grotek Cal-Max, GH CaliMagic)
  • Typical dose: 1–2 ml/L, start low and increase gradually
  • Coco coir: always use CalMag from the start, with every watering

6. Micronutrient Deficiencies: Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Boron

Micronutrients are needed in tiny amounts but their absence causes serious damage. All are immobile — symptoms appear on new growth.

Iron (Fe)

  • Interveinal yellowing on NEW leaves (unlike Mg which affects old leaves)
  • New leaves may turn completely white in severe cases
  • Common cause: pH too high (> 6.5 in soil)

Zinc (Zn)

  • New leaves become smaller, edges become wavy
  • Internode spacing becomes abnormally short

Manganese (Mn)

  • Small brown spots between veins on new leaves
  • Easily confused with Mg deficiency but occurs on new growth, not old

Boron (B)

  • Growing tips deform, new leaves become thick and brittle
  • Hollow roots, stunted growth

General fix: Check pH first — most micronutrient deficiencies are caused by pH lockout, not actual absence. If pH is correct and deficiency persists, supplement with chelated micronutrients (EDDHA-Fe, ZnSO4).

7. Nutrient Excess: Recognizing Nutrient Burn & Toxicity

Too much is just as dangerous as too little. Many beginners overfeed thinking “more = better.”

Nutrient Burn

  • Leaf tips turn yellow/brown, appearing burnt — starts at the pointed tips
  • Progresses inward if uncorrected
  • EC/PPM too high in nutrient solution

Nitrogen Toxicity

  • Abnormally dark green leaves, shiny/waxy appearance
  • Leaves curl downward like claws (clawing) — the most distinctive sign
  • Delayed flowering, airy buds, reduced yield

Phosphorus Toxicity

  • Locks out micronutrients: Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg become unavailable
  • Multiple deficiency symptoms appear simultaneously
  • Usually caused by excessive bloom booster

Treatment

  • Reduce nutrients immediately (50% dose or plain water for 1–2 waterings)
  • Light flush: water with correct pH at 2–3x pot volume
  • After flush, restart at 50% recommended dose and increase gradually

8. Nutrient Lockout — When Plants Can’t Absorb

Lockout occurs when nutrients ARE present in solution but the plant cannot absorb them.

  • Cause 1: pH too high or too low
  • Cause 2: EC too high — salt buildup around roots blocks absorption
  • Cause 3: Excess of one element blocks another (e.g., excess P blocks Fe, Zn)

Fix: Flush with correctly pH’d water → measure runoff pH and EC → resume feeding at low dose. If runoff EC > 3.0, flush again.

9. The 5-Step Diagnostic Process

When you see abnormal leaves, don’t rush to add more nutrients. Follow this sequence:

  1. pH: Check pH of your feed solution AND runoff
  2. EC: Check runoff EC/PPM
  3. Location: Old leaves (bottom) = mobile nutrients (N, P, K, Mg). New leaves (top) = immobile (Ca, Fe, Mn, Zn, B).
  4. Compare: Match symptoms against descriptions of each element. Pick the 1–2 best fits.
  5. Treat: Correct pH first, wait 3–5 days. No improvement? Supplement the correct element at a low dose.

Damaged leaves will NOT recover — observe new growth to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
