Stretch: Controlling Height During the Flowering Transition — Complete Guide

What Is the Flowering Stretch?

When switching from an 18/6 to a 12/12 light schedule, most photoperiod cannabis strains undergo a rapid height increase called the stretch. During the first 1–3 weeks of flowering, plants can grow 50–300% taller depending on genetics. Understanding and controlling this phenomenon is an essential indoor growing skill — it determines light distance, light distribution, and ultimately yield.

Characteristics of Stretch

  • Timing: Begins days 1–3 after flipping to 12/12, peaks at week 2, tapers off and stops by weeks 3–4
  • Symptoms: Internodes elongate noticeably. The main stem shoots upward, and side branches follow
  • Biological purpose: Plants need to position flowers as high as possible for wind pollination in nature — a survival strategy

Research from the Volcani Institute (Israel, 2024) published in Horticulture Research identified two distinct phases: Phase 1 (days 1–10) — rapid stem growth with long internodes; Phase 2 (from day 10) — internodes shorten, compact flowers begin forming.


Hormonal Mechanisms Behind the Stretch

Gibberellin (GA) — The Master Hormone

Gibberellins are plant hormones primarily responsible for stem cell elongation.

  • Early phase (days 1–10): GA₄ levels remain elevated from the vegetative stage, driving strong internode elongation
  • Late phase (from day 10): Short-day photoperiod suppresses GA₄ synthesis at the shoot apex, slowing stem elongation and triggering compact flower cluster formation

Experiments applying exogenous gibberellin to plants receiving 12/12 light showed they continued stretching as if still under 18/6 — proving GA is the “master switch” controlling stretch.

Auxin — A Supporting Role

Auxin (IAA) concentrates at the shoot apex and enhances cell elongation alongside gibberellin, but its independent effect on stretch is minimal compared to GA.

Phytochrome & Far-red Response

  • When the Pfr/Pr ratio drops (more far-red, less red) → plants trigger the shade avoidance response: elongating stems to rise above the surrounding canopy
  • HPS lights emit more far-red than LEDs → plants under HPS typically stretch more
  • Modern full-spectrum LEDs allow blue:red:far-red ratio adjustment → more precise stretch control

Pro tip: If your strain has a 100% stretch ratio and you want a final height of 120 cm, flip when the plant reaches ~60 cm. Always subtract 20–30 cm for pot height and light clearance.


6 Stretch Control Techniques

1. LST (Low Stress Training)

Gently bending branches without tissue damage to create a flat, even canopy.

  • Method: Use soft ties to pull branches down and anchor to pot edges or trellis
  • Timing: Week 3–4 of veg through end of week 2 flowering
  • Advantage: Low stress, works for all strains including autoflowers

2. Supercropping (High Stress Training)

Controlled micro-damage to inner stem tissue by pinching and bending 90°, forming a reinforced “knuckle.”

  • Method: Pinch the stem gently between thumb and forefinger until inner tissue softens (do NOT break the outer skin). Bend to 90°, secure with ties
  • Timing: Weeks 1–2 of flowering while branches are still flexible
  • Result: Instant height reduction of 15–30 cm per point. The knuckle increases transport capacity → bigger buds above
  • Warning: Do NOT supercrop autoflowers

3. SCRoG (Screen of Green)

A horizontal net/trellis above the plants forces branches through the screen, creating a uniform canopy plane.

  • Setup: Place a net (5–10 cm squares) at 40–50 cm above pots
  • Tucking: Weave branches through squares throughout weeks 1–3 of flowering. Goal: fill 80–90% of the screen before stretch ends
  • Advantage: Perfect flat canopy, 20–40% yield increase

4. Topping & FIMming Before Flip

Must be done before flipping to 12/12, ideally 2–3 weeks prior.

  • Topping: Remove the main growth tip → two new tops form. Can be repeated 2–3 times
  • FIMming: Remove 75% of the tip → 3–4 new tops, but less predictable
  • Never top/FIM autoflowers

5. Light Spectrum Adjustment (Blue Light Ratio)

Blue light (400–500 nm) suppresses cell elongation via cryptochrome activation.

  • Weeks 1–2 flowering: Increase blue to 30–40% of total spectrum (adjustable LEDs)
  • From week 3: Reduce blue, increase red (620–660 nm)
  • HPS cannot adjust spectrum — this is where LEDs excel

6. DIF Technique (Day/Night Temperature Differential)

Hand test: Hold the back of your hand at canopy level, facing the light. Hold for 30 seconds. If uncomfortably hot → light is too close, raise 5–10 cm.

Week 1–3 Flowering Checklist

Week 1 (Days 1–7 After Flip)

  • ☐ Begin LST: bend tallest branches down horizontally
  • ☐ Apply cool morning pulse: drop to 18–20°C for first 2–3 hours after lights on
  • ☐ Increase blue light to 30–40% if LED allows
  • ☐ Measure PPFD at canopy — target 600–800 μmol/m²/s
  • ☐ Switch to flowering nutrients (increase P-K, reduce N)

Week 2 (Days 8–14 — Peak Stretch)

  • ☐ Supercrop branches exceeding the canopy — pinch and bend 90°
  • ☐ Tuck branches into SCRoG net (if using)
  • ☐ Check and raise lights to match stretch speed (may need 5–10 cm/day)
  • ☐ Foliar spray kelp extract (1–2 ml/L) for natural cytokinins
  • ☐ Light defoliation: remove large fan leaves blocking bud sites
  • ☐ Monitor VPD: maintain 1.0–1.4 kPa, humidity 45–55%

Week 3 (Days 15–21 — Stretch Tapering Off)

  • ☐ Stretch slowing — stop supercropping (branches stiffening)
  • ☐ Lock in light distance at optimal flowering level
  • ☐ Shift spectrum: reduce blue, increase red (620–660 nm)
  • ☐ Return DIF to normal: day 24–26°C, night 20–22°C
  • ☐ Pistils appearing — confirms stretch is ending
  • ☐ Overall assessment: Is the canopy even? Any branches too close to the light?
