[Knowledge] What is a Biostimulant? "Vitamins & Probiotics" for Plants in Cannabis Cultivation

In recent years, organic / GACP growers have been hearing the word “biostimulant” more and more. But how is a biostimulant different from fertilizer? Is it a pesticide? And what is its real role in cannabis cultivation?

A brief write-up for everyone to discuss.


1. What is a Biostimulant?

Simply put:

Biostimulant = vitamins + digestive enzymes + probiotics for plants

Not to “feed” the plant (like NPK), nor to “kill disease” (like pesticides), but to activate the biological system of the plant and root zone so the plant can:

  • Use fertilizer more efficiently
  • Handle stress better
  • Get sick less often
  • Produce better quality flowers

Common ingredients:

  • Humic & Fulvic acid
  • Seaweed and kelp extracts
  • Amino acids, organic peptides
  • Beneficial microorganisms (mycorrhizae, Trichoderma, Bacillus, Pseudomonas…)
  • Plant extracts & natural compounds (silicon from horsetail, chitosan, betaine…)

Biostimulants contain virtually no N-P-K, so they are not classified as fertilizers in the traditional sense.


2. How is it Different from Fertilizers & Pesticides?

Biostimulant Biological activation → strong roots, better nutrient uptake, stress tolerance

When setting up GACP / organic:

  • Fertilizer must be optimized per strain and environment
  • IPM handles pest management
  • Biostimulant is the foundation layer that helps both work more effectively

3. Why is it Especially Important for Cannabis (medical / GACP)?

Biostimulants help:

  • Strong roots, balanced root microbiome → reduces risk of pythium, fusarium, root rot
  • Better stress tolerance → less shock during transplant, topping
  • Better fertilizer utilization → reduced salt buildup
  • Less disease pressure → easier to pass testing

4. Popular Biostimulant Groups

4.1 Mycorrhizae & Root Zone Microbes

Expand root absorption area, compete with pathogenic fungi

4.2 Humic & Fulvic Acid

Improve soil/coco structure, reduce lockout

4.3 Seaweed Extracts & Amino Acids

Kelp provides natural cytokinin, auxin; amino acids speed recovery

4.4 Organic Silicon, Horsetail, Chitosan

Thicken cell walls, increase resistance to fungi and insects


5. How to Integrate Biostimulants into Your Current System

Principles: Don’t replace fertilizer — use alongside | Start low – go slow

6. Important Notes

  • Not magic – if nutrients/pH/EC are wrong, it will still fail
  • Choose products with clear MSDS/COA (OMRI, EU organic)
  • Avoid “secret formula” products with unknown ingredients
