1. Organic vs Mineral: Basic Concepts

1.1 Mineral Fertilizers (Synthetic/Mineral)

  • Nutrients in dissolved ionic form, absorbed IMMEDIATELY by the plant
  • Precise control over NPK, EC, pH
  • Examples: General Hydroponics Flora series, CANNA, Advanced Nutrients

1.2 Organic Fertilizers

  • Nutrients in organic form, requiring microorganisms to break them down before plant uptake
  • Slower but more sustainable, improves soil over time
  • Examples: Biobizz, Grotek Organic, manure, oil cake, guano

Key point: Plants do not distinguish the source — they all absorb NH4+, NO3-, H2PO4-, K+ ions. The difference lies in the PROCESS by which nutrients reach the roots.

2. Soil Food Web — The Ecosystem Beneath the Soil

The soil food web is the network of organisms in the soil that convert organic matter into nutrients for plants:

  • Bacteria & Fungi: break down organic matter, retain nutrients within their biomass
  • Protozoa & Nematodes: feed on bacteria, excrete N and P in plant-available forms
  • Earthworms: create aeration channels, produce nutrient-rich castings
  • Mycorrhiza: extend root reach, increase P uptake by 2-5 times

Strong mineral fertilizers (high EC) can kill or significantly reduce this microbial system — high salt levels in particular kill mycorrhiza.

3. Living Soil: Recipe & Principles

3.1 What is Living Soil?

Soil blended rich in organic matter, containing an active microbial ecosystem, where the plant is “fed” by the soil rather than by the grower. Only watering and periodic top dressing are needed.

3.2 Coots Mix Recipe (basic)

The classic Coots Mix recipe, updated:

  • 1/3 Sphagnum peat moss (or coco coir)
  • 1/3 Aeration (pumice / perlite / rice hulls)
  • 1/3 Compost + vermicompost (EWC)

Amendments (per ~30L of mix):

  • 1 cup Neem cake (slow-release N)
  • 1 cup Kelp meal (K + micronutrients + hormones)
  • 1 cup Crustacean meal (N + Ca + chitin → stimulates Trichoderma)
  • 1/2 cup Rock phosphate or bone meal (slow-release P)
  • 1/2 cup Gypsum (Ca + S, does not alter pH)
  • 1/4 cup Basalt rock dust (micronutrients + Si)
  • Mycorrhiza (Glomus intraradices): sprinkle into the planting hole

Let the soil “cook” for 2-4 weeks before planting — to allow microorganisms to break down materials and reach balance.

4. No-Till Cannabis: Cultivation Without Tilling

4.1 Principle

No turning of soil, no replacing soil between crops. Cut old plant stalks at the base, let roots decompose in place. Top dress and plant cover crops between cycles.

4.2 Proven Benefits

  • Preserves the fungal network — which is destroyed when soil is tilled
  • USDA 2025 study (Chacon et al.): No-till + cover crop produced significantly higher CBG, CBDA, and terpenes compared to conventionally tilled soil
  • Soil improves over time (each successive crop performs better than the last)
  • Cost reduction: no need to buy new soil, less fertilizer required

4.3 Cover Crops for Cannabis

  • Clover: fixes nitrogen, retains moisture
  • Daikon radish: breaks up compacted soil, deep roots
  • Buckwheat: attracts beneficial insects, releases P
  • Cut cover crop for mulch before planting the new cycle

5. Compost Tea & KNF

5.1 AACT (Actively Aerated Compost Tea)

Compost tea is an extract from compost, continuously aerated for 24-48 hours to rapidly multiply aerobic microorganisms:

  • Recipe: 1 cup EWC + 1 tbsp molasses + 5 gallons of dechlorinated water
  • Aerate vigorously for 24-36 hours (aquarium air pump)
  • Use immediately after aeration stops (microorganisms die quickly under anaerobic conditions)
  • Apply to roots or foliar spray in the early morning

5.2 KNF (Korean Natural Farming)

  • FPJ (Fermented Plant Juice): young leaves + brown sugar 1:1, fermented 7 days
  • FAA (Fish Amino Acid): fish + brown sugar 1:1, 3-6 months
  • LAB (Lactic Acid Bacteria): rice wash water → fermented → mixed with milk
  • Well-suited to Southeast Asia due to readily available, low-cost ingredients

6. Mycorrhiza & Beneficial Microorganisms

Peer-reviewed research on microorganisms and cannabis:

  • Mucilaginibacter sp. (2023, J. Agricultural and Food Chemistry): increased total THC and CBD by ~11% when inoculated during the veg stage
  • Biofertilizers + humic acid (2020): increased biomass by 122%, height by 105%, photosynthetic efficiency by 43%
  • Mycorrhiza (Rhizophagus irregularis): increases P uptake, positively affects terpene profile

Note: Genetics remain the primary determinant of cannabinoid content. Microorganisms adjust output within the range permitted by the genetics, not turn a low-THC strain into a high-THC one.

8. Practical Guide: Getting Started with Living Soil

Step 1: Mix soil according to the Coots Mix recipe (above)

Step 2: Let it “cook” for 2-4 weeks, water to keep moist, mix once a week

Step 3: Sprinkle mycorrhiza at planting (in contact with roots)

Step 4: Water only with dechlorinated water + compost tea every 2 weeks

Step 5: Top dress every 3-4 weeks (EWC + kelp + neem cake)

Step 6: Mulch the surface with straw/dry leaves (retains moisture, feeds microorganisms)

Step 7: After harvest, cut the stalk at the base, top dress again, plant a cover crop → next cycle
