1. Why Train Your Plants at All?

Cannabis grows naturally as a Christmas tree — one dominant main cola reaching for the light while lower branches sit in shadow, producing small, airy buds. In a grow tent with a fixed light height, that shape wastes most of your photons.

Plant training exists to solve a single problem: get more bud sites into the sweet spot of your light footprint. A flat, even canopy ensures uniform PPFD distribution across every cola, which translates directly into heavier, denser harvests from the same wattage.

Training techniques fall into two broad categories:

Both categories share the same goal — control height, increase yield sites, and maximize the return on every watt of light you provide. The difference is how aggressively you reshape the plant to get there.


2. LST — Low Stress Training

LST is arguably the single most important technique for height-restricted indoor grows. Instead of cutting or breaking anything, you use ties, strings, or clips to bend stems horizontally, creating a flat canopy without slowing the plant’s growth rate.

When to Start

Begin LST when the main stem transitions from a soft, green branch to a slightly woody main stem — typically around the 3rd to 4th node set. At this stage the stem is flexible enough to bend without snapping, but sturdy enough to hold its new position.

How to Do It — Step by Step

  1. Choose your anchor points. Drill small holes in the rim of your pot, use stakes pushed into the medium, or clip plant wire to the pot edge.

  2. Select your tie material. Use thick, soft string or garden wire with a rubber coating. Thin string or fishing line will cut into the stem as it thickens — avoid these entirely. Some growers tie small weights (stones or even bricks on strings) to branch tips instead of anchoring to the pot.

  3. Bend the main stem gently toward the edge of the pot at roughly a 90-degree angle from its original position. The goal is horizontal, not downward.

  4. Don’t tie too tight. Leave enough slack that the stem can continue to thicken naturally. A tie that was snug on Monday will be strangling the branch by Friday.

  5. Work slowly. If you cannot reach your target position in one session, bend a few centimeters each day until you get there. Patience prevents disaster.

  6. Repeat as needed. As secondary branches grow upward from the now-horizontal main stem, bend those outward too. Over days, you create a flat, star-shaped canopy filling your entire grow space.

Common Concerns

“The leaves are pointing down after I bent the stem — did I kill it?”

No. After bending, leaves will temporarily point downward or sideways. Within 24 to 48 hours, they will naturally rotate back toward the light source. This is normal phototropism — the plant is fine.

“The plant keeps growing too tall even after bending.”

Continue pulling new growth down. LST is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing conversation with your plant throughout vegetative growth.

“I pulled too hard and the branch snapped.”

If the branch is still partially connected, tape it immediately with grafting tape or even electrical tape. Many plants recover fully from partial breaks. If it snapped clean off, that branch is lost — but the rest of the plant will compensate.

Why LST Works So Well

  • Fills your entire grow space without topping, which temporarily slows growth
  • Maximizes yield from a minimum number of plants (useful where plant counts are limited)
  • Combined with topping, delivers the best results of any training approach
  • Outdoors, keeps plants low-profile and hidden while maximizing light exposure along horizontal stems
  • Ensures even lamp distance across the canopy, so every cola receives the same PPFD

3. Supercropping — The Controlled Break

Supercropping sits at the boundary between LST and HST. You are intentionally damaging the inner tissue of the stem while keeping the outer skin intact — a controlled partial break that forces horizontal growth without cutting anything off.

When to Use Supercropping

  • During late veg or early flower when branches suddenly stretch too close to your lights
  • When you need to equalize canopy height but topping is no longer an option (flowering has begun)
  • As a deliberate technique to strengthen branches and increase nutrient flow

How to Supercrop

  1. Choose the spot. Pick a point on the branch about halfway between the base and the tip, in a section of newer, slightly flexible growth. Avoid old, woody stems — they will snap rather than bend.

  2. Soften the tissue. Gently roll the stem between your thumb and forefinger for 10 to 15 seconds. You should feel the inner fibers begin to give way. Some growers describe the sensation as “crushing a drinking straw” — you want to feel the inner structure collapse slightly without tearing the outer skin.

  3. Bend to 90 degrees. Once softened, fold the branch at that point so it hangs roughly horizontal or at a right angle. The branch will look damaged and droopy.

  4. Support if needed. If the branch flops too far down, use a stake or tie to hold it at the desired angle while it heals.

  5. Wait and watch. Over the next 3 to 7 days, the plant will form a thick knuckle of scar tissue at the bend point. This healed knot becomes stronger than the original stem and acts as a superhighway for nutrients.

Why the “Break” Actually Helps

The knuckle that forms at the supercropping site creates thicker, sturdier tissue with increased vascular capacity. Lower bud sites below the bend often respond with more vigorous growth, as the temporary interruption redistributes growth hormones. Many experienced growers call supercropping their “secret weapon” precisely because the plant responds to the stress by overcompensating — producing thicker stems and more robust flowers.

What If the Branch Fully Snaps?

Don’t panic. If the outer skin tears or the branch partially breaks:

  1. Gently realign the branch to its intended position.
  2. Wrap tightly with plant tape, grafting tape, or even electrical tape.
  3. Support with a stake or tie so the weight of the branch doesn’t pull the break apart.
  4. The plant will typically heal in 7 to 14 days. Many growers report that partially broken branches produce larger buds due to the intensified stress response.

If the branch breaks clean off, it is not recoverable — but the remaining plant will redistribute energy to its other branches.


4. Topping and FIM — The Classic HST Methods

While covered in detail in a previous article, topping and FIM deserve mention here as the HST techniques most commonly combined with LST.

Both techniques work by removing apical dominance — the hormonal signal that tells the plant to prioritize one main cola. Once that signal is gone, multiple branches compete equally for light, naturally creating a bushier, wider plant.

LST + Topping is the gold standard combination. Top the plant once or twice to create multiple main branches, then use LST to spread those branches outward into a flat, even canopy. This combined approach is consistently demonstrated as the highest-yielding training method.


5. Lollipopping — Clean the Understory

Lollipopping means removing the lower branches and growth sites that sit below the canopy and never receive meaningful light. The name comes from the resulting shape — a bare stem with a round canopy on top.

How to Lollipop

  • In the first 1 to 2 weeks of flowering, remove the bottom third of each branch — small side shoots, underdeveloped bud sites, and fan leaves that are completely shaded.
  • Do not strip the plant bare. You are removing only what will never produce quality flowers.
  • The energy that would have gone into those shaded, airy popcorn buds is now redirected to upper colas, resulting in bigger, denser top flowers.

Lollipopping is essential for both indoor and outdoor grows and pairs naturally with every training technique discussed in this guide.


6. One-Bud Technique — The Minimalist Approach

For Sea of Green (SOG) setups where many small plants fill the canopy rather than a few large ones, the one-bud technique offers a streamlined alternative.

The concept: remove all side branches while keeping every fan leaf on the main stem. The result is a single large cola running from bottom to top — no side branches competing for energy.

Key points:

  • Remove the first three levels of branching but keep all fan leaves attached to the main stem — they still provide photosynthesis
  • Each plant produces one thick, dense cola
  • Best suited for SOG with many plants packed tightly together in a grid
  • Not compatible with LST or topping — this is a fundamentally different approach

7. Combining Techniques — The Recovery Rule

When stacking multiple training methods, the single most important rule is: allow adequate recovery time between stresses. At least one full week of recovery should separate any two high-stress events. LST can continue during recovery periods since it does not significantly stress the plant.

Expect to extend your vegetative stage by 1 to 3 weeks when using combined training compared to an untrained grow. The additional veg time is repaid many times over at harvest.

Autoflower Note

Autoflowers have a fixed vegetative window and cannot recover from high-stress techniques. For autos, use LST only — begin at the 3rd node and continue gently throughout veg. Do not top, FIM, or supercrop autoflowering varieties.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Using ties that are too thin or too tight — stems thicken rapidly during veg. Use thick, soft material and check ties every few days. Wire or fishing line will cut into growth.

  2. Supercropping during late flower — after week 2 to 3 of flowering, branches become woody and will snap cleanly rather than bend. Supercrop only during the stretch.

  3. Bending too aggressively in one session — if you cannot reach your target position, bend a few centimeters each day. Forcing it risks a clean break.

  4. Treating LST as a one-time event — LST requires daily attention during active vegetative growth. The plant keeps growing upward; you keep bending it outward.

  5. Stacking HST techniques without recovery time — topping on Monday and supercropping on Wednesday will stunt growth. Space high-stress events at least one week apart.

  6. Supercropping autoflowers — the 3 to 7 day recovery period costs growth time that autos simply cannot afford.
