Pre-Harvest Flushing: Science or Myth?
1. What Is Flushing?
Flushing means stopping all fertilizer and watering with plain water only during the final 1-2 weeks before harvest. The claimed purpose is to help the plant consume accumulated nutrients, producing cleaner flowers, white ash, and smoother smoke.
This practice became widespread in the 1990s-2000s, passed down by word of mouth within the community.
2. Why Do Growers Believe in Flushing?
- White ash = clean
- Smoother smoke
- Saves on fertilizer costs
- Community tradition
3. Scientific Research (2020-2026)
At least 4 peer-reviewed studies have been conducted. Common conclusion: flushing does NOT significantly improve flower quality.
4. RX Green Technologies Study (2020)
- Compared 4 flush durations: 0, 7, 10, 14 days on Cherry Diesel grown in coco coir
- Results: mineral content, THC, and terpene levels showed no significant difference. The 0-day flush group was rated best-tasting in a blind test.
5. HortScience Study (2025)
- CBD cannabis, controlled environment
- Results: no significant difference in minerals, cannabinoids, or terpenes
- Conclusion: flushing is a legacy practice with no scientific basis
6. Does Flushing Remove Substances from Flowers?
NO. Minerals in flowers are locked inside cells (vacuoles, cell walls), not in free water. When fertilizing stops, the plant draws nutrients from older leaves, but substances already fixed in flowers remain unchanged. All studies show that mineral content in flowers does NOT decrease.
7. What Actually Determines Quality?
- Slow dry: 15°C, 60% RH, 10-14 days
- Proper curing: glass jars for 2-8 weeks, breaking down chlorophyll and sugars
- Harvest timing: trichome amber at 10-30%
- Genetics: determines 70%+ of quality
- White ash depends on combustion temperature and natural mineral content, not flushing
8. When Is Flushing Still Useful?
- Salt stress/overfeed: EC runoff > 3.0
- Nutrient lockout: pH drift
- Wrong fertilizer dosage: flush and restart
- Compliance: organic certification, GACP
In these cases, flushing is troubleshooting, not standard procedure.
9. Conclusion
- Flushing does NOT remove minerals from flowers
- Flushing does NOT improve THC, CBD, terpenes, or flavor
- Flushing IS useful for troubleshooting
- Focus on slow drying, proper curing, and correct harvest timing
- Experiment: grow 2 plants of the same strain, flush 1 and don’t flush the other, then compare
